Doubtful Sound - part 2!

If you're just tuning in, go check out the post before this, as this is just a continuation of the first!

So, I mentioned in the last post that I decided to go straight off the kayak to the heli-pad to jump. I wanted to be a bit cheeky to the girls who were still on the fence - walk straight up and jump straight off. Which, to be fair, I did. But, as you'll see in the video below, I did have a quick moment where I was like "fuck this is high." It was a bit daunting to jump - the heli-pad is not quite as wide as the other decks, so you need to make sure you're out far enough, and the drop feels longer than it looks in the video.

I jumped and was surprised by how long it took me to hit the water. And it felt like it took me longer than expected to surface too, even though you can see it was really quite quick. Barak kindly took a video for me, and I have left it in it's un-cropped state. I kind of like hearing how they talk about it after I've jumped off, since I couldn't hear that from the water - plus the extra footage of Heather and Abby questioning their life choices!

Post-kayak and swim, we all sat down to a delicious dinner. I won't lie - I missed out here. This is definitely a key part of the experience, and while my dinner was lovely, it did not compare to the planned dinner! First, we started with (no joke) the best tomato soup I have ever had. It was almost more like marinara sauce than tomato soup. Then, I had some veggie spring rolls while the others each had half a crawfish, served cold. With a shellfish allergy, one of the things I feel I miss out on is the activity of working through a lobster. It makes me think of cats and dogs that get their food from a puzzle - they have to solve the puzzle in order to get the food? And I feel like that's an experience in and of itself. The third course was a lightly battered grilled fresh-caught blue cod (chicken for me) with roasted potatoes and salad. Then, we ended the meal with sticky date pudding and cream. Yum.

After dinner, we soaked in some of the sunset before heading back in for a few drinks. The girls had brought coffee tequila, in which most of us decided to partake (really delicious), and most of us had wine.

Once the sunset, a few of us went up to the top deck to stargaze - the moon had not yet risen above the hills, so you could see pretty well. Not perfect, because the light from the moon was still escaping around the hills.

The next morning, there was supposedly a loud boat alarm that would go off around 6:30. I didn't hear it, but maybe we were protected being upstairs? In any case, I work up around that time anyway, because the generators on the boat kicked back on and the light was already starting to appear pre-sunrise. The boys slept through it, though, so I had a nice peaceful morning soaking in the views myself.

We didn't do anything special in the morning - just headed back to dock at the head of the fiord. Jackie made us a morning feast of eggs, bacon, sausage, hashbrowns, toast, and mushrooms - it was delicious. We did, however, see a Fiordland crested penguins swimming along the waters! I was pretty proud to have spotted it and figured out what it was (well, a penguin at least) before the skipper pointed it out! Richard had told us on the drive in that it would be very unlikely to see them, as they often come through only to climb up into the rocks for molting season, then they head straight back out to sea. But there it was!

One thing I didn't mention was that as we were driving to the sound to start the trip, Richard mentioned that it was possible order a helicopter to pick you up from the boat and fly you out of the sound. I assumed that no one would be interested - it would be quite a significant added expense to what is already a pretty expensive activity. To my surprise, six people (half our group!) were interested, so Richard ordered the helicopter to come pick them up about halfway down the fiord.

It was so cool to see the helicopter approach and land on the boat's helipad, load up, and then take off into the fiord. I imagine the folks on the helicopter had a great view on their way out, not to mention a much faster journey! But I enjoyed the cruise back through the fiord, really soaking in the calm of nature with our smaller group.

We got to the visitors centre about 30 minutes before our water taxi across Lake Manapouri, which gave us plenty of time to read about the Manapouri Power Station, the history of the lake, and even a little about sandflies (pesky buggers). I learned that sandfly eggs are laid underwater and when they hatch, the sandflies are floated out in a bubble! Very Glinda of them. The cruise back across Lake Manapouri was a bit different this time - virtually no cloud cover. But Pete and I were having excellent conversation as we rode across.

We got back to Manapouri at about noon, so I headed over to the Church pub - it's not as good as Christchurch's Church pub, but it hit the spot for lunch. A ham, cheese, and pineapple toastie with chips.

I won't lie - when I got back to Te Anau, I crashed a bit, as has been happening lately. But, I did manage to do my washing, shower, cook dinner, and all those other menial tasks!

making LEAPS and BOUNDS with the feral kitten!! tonight I managed to slowly move her food onto my lap to encourage her to put her paws on me while she ate, and once that clicked, she kept kneading on my hands and my legs. I've already broken the seal w/ being able to touch her, but getting HER to touch ME seems huge, I think she's been really needing that, since I don't know how long it's been since she's been around her family. wooo progress!!! p.s. I don't have any pictures yet, bc whenever I'm with her, I'm playing a youtube video of cat purrs / trills to calm her down, and if I go to take a picture it'll pause the video. but I WILL take a picture of her soon!

God I am OBSESSED with this panel. The sheer amount of yearning in Jason's eyes, looking almost shy. Sneakily stealing a glance at Dick. Dick smiling a little, staring up at the ceiling, completely unaware of Jason's stare.

This feels, like, CLASSICALLY gay. This feels like a scene you'd see in a movie or show where two characters are clearly pining for each other but haven't yet confessed (but it's clearly heading that way).

Like, there is ZERO way to interpret this as platonic or as "just hero worship". Especially in the context of the entire annual. It feels like a 150k slowburn fanfic the way this annual is written. This entire thing threw me off so badly when I just joined the fandom bc this doesn't at all feel platonic.

I could talk about this annual for HOURS man

How long was Viktor in the Hexgoop coma? Because I’ve heard everything from days weeks and months in various fics and posts. I feel the need to hammer it down.

How long was Jayce holding vigil and obsessing over what the hexcore was doing to Viktor? Because he was distraught neglecting everything in his personal and professional life for a long while before the scene where Mel visits him exhausted and spiraling clutching Viktor’s cane for comfort to get him to talk to people and stop saying things like “it should be me up there”.

Clue 1 The Council Meeting that Jayce declined to attend: Obviously this isn’t going to be 100% accurate because we only have flashes of Piltover’s medical system but… It was enough time that Salo who was paralyzed and left in agony was able to sit up in a wheelchair and bounce down a set of steps without obvious pain.

It was also enough time that we see of Shoola’s horrific facial wounds are healed scarring.

Realistically this would suggest many weeks too months for that amount of healing to happen.

(Sidenote: Mel Medarda protected Hextech and the whole city in the aftermath of the bombing (which was the job Jayce seems like he was not in a place to do as he immediately shifted his focus from his job to Viktor’s survival). She also took over Jayce’s place as de facto leader in the council meeting and did not push Jayce to leave the lab to attend even though it would have greatly benefited her for him to be there in the vote to not invade the Undercity with Hextech weapons. She had great respect for the fact he needed to be there to care for a loved one. Some people forget that.)

Clue 2 The Statue: It was enough time that shortly after Jayce re-emerged to society to attend the memorial for the 3 fallen Councilors we see a massive statue has been fully finished. Again, even rushed that suggests weeks too months.

Conclusion: While for the purpose of creative license it is impossible to fully project a timeframe I would pose it was on the short end at least 6 weeks and a few months at most, and that just makes Jayce’s devastation when Viktor left so much worse.

He waited and watched an took careful notes for long time. He held distraught vigil and from what we’ve seen may have neglected an entire city for Viktor while Mel stepped into the role he was not capable of taking at that point.

He loved Viktor so much it was actually insane the devotion he had to not even leave his side unless absolutely necessary even when he had the whole city waiting he would have rather been there in the lab with Viktor. It brings so much more to his words about leaving the council and how he truly believed he always belonged by Viktor’s side in the lab when he had hardly left either for WEEKS to MONTHS.

correct me if I’m out of line bc I’m not a detransitioner, but I hate hate hate how common arguments against transition/“in defense of” detransitioners is “they can’t have kids!” or “they can’t breastfeed!”

why should mitigating harm always come down to what a woman can do for a potential child (or a man’s ability to father children)? why isn’t it enough to keep HER from harm? it’s just prioritizing women as broodmares all over again. why isn’t it enough to keep HER from chronic pain, heart and blood pressure issues, incontinence, necrosis, limited mobility and death?
